To enhance the English listening skill, I have subscribed and followed the Advanced magazine every month. Now it has been lasted for one year long and I'd like to summarize in this article.

Advanced magazine is founded by Doris Brougham who has also founded the other two magazines, Let's talk in English and Studio Classroom. They are all English learning materials but vary in difficulty. Among these books, Advanced is the highest level of the three. I used to listen to Studio Classroom the year before last year. However, after a period of time there was a little progress for me. Therefore, I switched to the magazine with higher level, said Advanced and now it has been one year long.

  2016.01.31 Advanced Magazine

As I have said before, the reading/listening/speaking/writing ability of English  is crucial in this globalized society. To compete with others and earn a better life, we have to improve our language skills, especially that we are not native speaker. However, we live in an environment of Mandarin and there is no such opportunity to practice English. Therefore, we need to be active when it comes to self-learning of English.

Following the English magazine is good way to enhance the capability of listening comprehension. Compared to the popular TED talks (it's also a good resource when speaking of English learning, I strongly recommend), the topic of this magazine is more focused. During the average 27 minutes of discussion, the instructors will go through the article in detail and repeat the same keynote again and again. You may not fully understand every word he/she said but you could perceive the idea of the article based on what you knew.

Advanced is completely discussed in English, without any Mandarin. It is composed of two parts, reading and discussion of the article. There are so many instructors participating in this English program, including Doris, Brendan, Linda, Hazel, Simon, Campbell, Amanda, Rebecca, Albert and so on. Everyone acts vividly in the studio and sometimes the conversation is funny. Thanks to these instructors, we have a delightful user experience when listening to this magazine.

Let us review how diligence we are to follow this magazine. Except for the Jan, Feb and July, we have full attendance in the other months. The reason why there is absence in above months is due to marathon, traveling to I-lan and climbing Mt. Jade respectively. All in all, the 97% of attendance rate indicates that we have serious attitude to improve our English.

At the end of this blog article, I'd like to summarize what I have done so far. I have subscribed and follow these English magazines for the whole 2015 year. Although I still have confusion and difficulty in some vocabulary, there is indeed progression when it comes to listening comprehension. I really appreciate these books and feel a sort of loss when I have to say goodbye to them. Cheers! To my devoted effort in the past.
